2011 Iditarod Musher list

Postby Ravenne » Sat Jun 26, 2010 9:44 pm

Aliy Zirkle posted the roster for the 2011 Iditarod on her blog today. Here's the link:

http://spkenneldoglog.blogspot.com/2010 ... gn-up.html

Can someone please remind me what the draw # means? Does that mean their starting # or bib # or both?

Also, Aily's 2010 Iditarod trail notes will be published on her site on July 1st! I can't wait!

ETA: Shut the front door! Mackey's back for 2011? I didn't expect that one. Woohoo! :D I guess he's not doing the Yukon Quest then. I'm going to miss Jeff King though, and the rivalry between him and Lance.

Hey Tanglefoot, Look closer, Hans did sign up. Never believe a musher when they say they're retiring. Well except maybe Jeff. Good to see Jessica Hendricks back. Interesting who didn't sign up. Even though ADN said he did, Rick Swenson isn't on the list. Some of the regular top-20's also missing are Sonny Lindner, Cim Smyth, Jessie Royer, John Baker, Zack Steer and Sven Haltman. Although there's still lots of time left. Not much competition for rookies yet. Jody Bailey and Mike Santos are the two I know.

I think 8 rookies is the smallest number of rookies we have had for some time. Overall this is the smallest number of sign-ups on the first day that I remember. It remains to be seen how many sign up between now and 30 Nov. I'm still hoping to raise the money to do it again :-)

There's one missing from the list: Kelly Maixner, a rookie from Big Lake

Also, good news: Mike Jonrowe was elected to the board. I think he'll be a great addition to the ITC.

Eric, hope we soon see your name on the list.
Karin Hendrickson is back, hope she has better luck in 2011.
And so good to see GB's name there!

Just finished reading DonBowers "Back of the Pack". Sure gives a good picture of just how hard the trail can be. Earlier this summer I read Libby Riddles story about being first woman to win the Iditarod. These first person accounts are interesting, full of facts I would never think of,scarey and filled with the beauty the mushers see on the trail.

If you want another good read try Brian O'Donoghue's "Honest Dogs" - Brian is the only musher to take the red lantern in both the Iditarod and the Quest. This is his Quest story.

Paulsen's "Winterdance" is a classic, and so funny Marti won't let me read it in bed anymore :-) Jeff King's "Cold Hands, Warm Heart" is another good read.

Rod Perry has just emailed me that the second volume of his Trailbreakers Iditarod History is due from the printer any minute. Volume 2 will be a history of the race itself. Looking forward to reading that. :D

OK--just requested home delivery for Winter Dance from local library.
They don't have Honest Dogs on their list :( or anything by Brian O'Donoghue :( :(
I've rooted for Jeff for the short time I've been following the race and ordered his book (because of the art work by Jeff's wife) and the tape. I listen to a lot of books on tape or cd while I work, I've 'read' so many books that way :D
